The Ubay National Science High School, commonly known as Ubay Science, SciHi, or sayhay, is a special public high school in the northeastern Bohol, Philippines, with a system fully separate from high schools operated under the Philippine Department of Education (it is an attached agency of the Philippine Department of Science and Technology). The Ubay National Science High School has currently 239 students as of school year 2010-2011.
The UNSHS System offers scholarships to Ubayano students and beyond who are exceptionally gifted in the sciences and mathematics, "helping the country reach a critical mass of professionals in science and technology." Admission to the UNHS is by competitive examination only, and only Filipino citizens are eligible to attend. Graduates of the UNSHS are usually bound to major in the pure and applied sciences, mathematics, or engineering upon entering college.
Ubay National Science High School started when a request from the former Department Education Culture and Sports (DECS) (now Department of Education) Bohol Division Office to create a special high school reached the hand of Dr. Clarita V. Alesna, Phd, the former Ubay District Supervisor. With the help of the former Bohol Second District solon Atty. Erico B. Aumentado, who is an Ubayano by birth, the school was created upon the approval of DECS. The school was at first named Ubay Science and Technology High School, and became the second science high school in Bohol, second only to that in Tagbilaran City.
It was established in July 1996 and utilized a building in Ubay Central Elementary School as its temporary shelter. Top elementary graduates from all over the municipality were gathered to form the pioneer batch. Two years later in 1998, a new school building was made to became the present-day two-storey high school building located in barangay Fatima near the DPWH building bordering Barangay Bood at the north. The school ground was donated by philanthropist Eutiquio del Valle, a grandson of the late Bohol Governor Eutiquio Boyles, and was inaugurated in June 1999.
The school was renamed Ubay Science High School in 1999 and changed later to Ubay National Science High School in 2001 through House Bill No. 5245 during the second regular session of the 14th Congress. On March 18, 2010, through Republic Act No. 10034, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved and signed into law the conversion of Ubay Science High School into Ubay National Science High School.
Mrs. Reynita Cuyno-Haduc led the school through its first seven years as the school principal. The campus produced its first batch of graduates in 2000. Afterwards, Mrs. Santifa Cornesio replaced Mrs. Haduc as principal of the school. Mrs. Cornesio retired on last school year 2010 and was replaced by Mr. Michael Hormachuelos, the present school principal.
Roughly 700 students take the Ubay Science High School admission examinations annually. Those who achieve the highest scores are admitted to the campus. Admission to the UNSHS is through the Science High School System National Competitive Examination (SHS-NCE). The screening consists of tests in Verbal, abstract reasoning, Science and Mathematics. To be eligible for admission, applicants must be Filipino students who must belong to the top 10% of the graduating class or must have special aptitude in science and math.
